Where INTELLIGENT Is Demonstrated

The INTELLIGENT project is being demonstrated across four diverse pilot sites in Europe, each selected to represent distinct energy system configurations, user profiles and regulatory contexts. From a rural island community in Ireland to residential districts in Switzerland and urban collective self-consumption models in Portugal, these pilots provide real-world environments to test and validate innovative tools for local energy trading, flexibility management and user engagement. Together, they serve as living laboratories for exploring how digital solutions and open-source platforms can support the transition to decentralised, citizen-driven energy systems across a variety of socio-technical settings.

INTELLIGENT Project: Year One in Review

Mistra SafeChem

Swedish national governmental funding - Swedish foundation for strategic environmental research focusing on biomass valorization from forestry residues and textiles waste and development on biobased materials and products.

CIRCALGAE

This Horizon Europe project CIRCALGAE has a goal to develop sustainable algae-based biorefineries and products supporting the health of aquatic ecosystems for a healthy planet and people.

Valuable Project

VALUABLE will focus on the demonstration of a platform non-plant-based biomass valorisation process for the production of yeast oils as a viable substitute for fossil-based and plant-based products (such as palm oil) in applications such as cosmetics, adhesives and resins.

NET-Fuels

NET-Fuels is a 4-year project funded by the European Commission's Horizon Europe programme to develop and validate integrated chemical and thermal processes to produce sustainable fuels and energy from low-grade waste biomass. The integrated system is designed to re-use and minimise process CO2 and, in conjunction with soil enrichment by the process biochar, will achieve certified negative greenhouse gases emissions.

CRONUS

CRONUS aims to accelerate on the path to sustainable bioenergy and can play an important and constructive role in achieving the UN SDGs (7,8,9,11,12 and 13) by incorporating in the biofuels production lines carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CUS) techniques promoting the concept of Bioenergy and Carbon capture, utilisation and storage. The latter can stand as a solution to meet the 2021 Glasgow agreement on climate change’s aim of less than 1,5οC and contributes to the phase-out of fossil fuels and the decarbonisation of the EU economy in accordance to European Green Deal goals.

FIBSUN

FIBSUN cultivates biomass on abandoned land to revitalise the soil and produce bio-based fibres for the construction, automotive and textile sectors. FIBSUN looks to optimise all aspects of novel bio-based fibre value chains by experimenting cultivation practices and industrial processes in real-world conditions, assessing the provisioning of ecosystem services and developing business models together with understanding of consumer needs.

BIORADAR

The BIORADAR Project, funded and supported by the EU’s Horizon Europe programme and the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), aims to help organisations, policymakers and investors have the necessary information to step towards a more sustainable, bio-based economic model by taking a system perspective to fill the indicator gaps in material circularity and evaluating the environmental and social impacts of industrial bio-based systems by developing digital monitoring tools that will provide benchmarks and a self-assessment platform for bio-based industries.
