INTELLIGENT Pilot Sites

Where INTELLIGENT Is Demonstrated

The INTELLIGENT project is being demonstrated across four diverse pilot sites in Europe, each selected to represent distinct energy system configurations, user profiles and regulatory contexts. From a rural island community in Ireland to residential districts in Switzerland and urban collective self-consumption models in Portugal, these pilots provide real-world environments to test and validate innovative tools for local energy trading, flexibility management and user engagement. Together, they serve as living laboratories for exploring how digital solutions and open-source platforms can support the transition to decentralised, citizen-driven energy systems across a variety of socio-technical settings.

CELL – Collaborative Energy Living Lab

The CELL pilot site in Buochs, Switzerland, is a nearly self-sufficient energy community composed of three residential buildings with integrated PV systems, hydroelectric generation, batteries and EV infrastructure. It serves as a real-world testbed for decentralised energy management, focusing on local energy trading, storage optimisation and flexibility services under a unified ownership model.

LIC – Lugaggia Innovation Community

The LIC pilot site in Capriasca, Switzerland, is a residential energy community managed by the local DSO, featuring 18 single-family homes and a kindergarten equipped with PV systems, heat pumps and a centrally operated district battery. It enables the testing of community-level energy sharing, demand response, and grid-aware optimisation in a fully monitored low-voltage distribution environment.

Greenvolt Comunidades

The Greenvolt Comunidades pilot sites in Portugal include two collective self-consumption communities: Feirense Football Stadium and Bicesse Kindergarten. Both are powered by PV systems. These sites demonstrate how solar energy can be shared in real time among diverse users, enabling social impact, energy cost reduction and insights into the operation of community energy under real grid conditions.

Aran Islands

The Aran Islands pilot site on Inis Mór, Ireland, is a rural energy community featuring residential, commercial and public buildings equipped with PV systems, batteries, and heat pumps. It provides a unique environment for testing demand-side flexibility, user-driven energy management and island-scale resilience.
